Leila McMillan (1982) born in California, USA, holds dual nationality UK & USA. She trained extensively in commercial dance in Southern California then moved to London to train at Laban where she gained a BA (hons) Contemporary Dance Theatre (2004) and worked with Athina Vahla and Wendy Houston; MA in Performance (2006); and she was a member of Transitions Dance Company (2004/05) working with choreographers: Henry Montes, Crystal Pite, Alicia Herrero Simon, Rafael Bonachela, and Thomas Lehmen. She has trained in flying low, passing through, contemporary release technique, skinner release, partner work, limon, graham, Cunningham, ballet, hip hop, break dance, jazz, tap, lyrical, African, bungee-assisted dance, wall running, tissue, rope, trapeze: in New York, California, London, Vienna, Costa Rica, Paris, Spain and Senegal. She has performed internationally with choreographers: David Zambrano, Jasmina Krizaj, Nina Fajdiga, Vicki Amedume, Layla Rosa, Lea Anderson… She has choreographed for Upswing, Kinetika and Aquabatix working with bungee-assisted dance, break dance, carnival and synchronized swimming. In 2008 she was awarded the Blueprint Bursary from Sadler’s Wells, London Youth Dance and East London Dance enabling her to create her first independent project iD touring the UK. In the beginning of 2010 she gained a certificate for teaching and developing David Zambranos’ “flying low” and “passing through” technique (50 days with David Zambrano in Costa Rica) and has gone on to teach regularly in London at Laban, Chisenhale and Greenwich Dance. She assisted David Zambrano in workshops in Ecole des Sable, Senegal, and organized Zambrano’s tour of 10 villages in Senegal. She is a member of 50collectiVe performing and teaching Passing Through around the world and the Chisenhale Artist Led Initiative. In 2011 she will organize, lead and embark on a tour of the USA with 50collectiVe; take part in choreographic residencies at LEM (Argentina) and La Caldera (Barcelona, Spain).
